One in Ten and Shakespeare Theatre’s Harman Center for the Arts Announce Strategic Collaboration

August 20, 2009, WASHINGTON DC — One in Ten is proud to announce a strategic partnership with STC Harman Center for the Arts, resulting in Reel Affirmations, their signature program, coming on board as a Resident Program of the Shakespeare Theatre. As a resident program housed in the year-old $85 million glass enclosed facility, Reel Affirmations will host its screenings in a state of the art facility designed specifically for arts programming. "This is a huge leap forward for us artistically and technically," says One in Ten Executive Director Margaret Murray. "With this strategic collaboration, we are able to showcase the best in LGBT cinema in a home worthy of our filmmakers."
Chris Jennings, STC's Managing Director, says this collaboration was "a natural. After almost 20 years, Reel Affirmations has become a must-stop venue for GLBT filmmakers from both the United States and world-wide, and we are delighted to take this exciting step with One In Ten, giving the festival a superb foundation to grow in the coming years."
Reel Affirmations: The Nation's LGBT Film Festival now stands among the top three annual DC film festivals overall, according to a recent issue of Washington City Paper. And Washingtonian magazine just named One In Ten a top GLBT organization. By becoming a resident organization of STC, Reel Affirmations is poised to continue its growth trajectory, despite a significant downturn in support for the arts. In the past three years, ticket revenue has increased nearly $22,000 to $114,000 annually.
This year, Reel Affirmations opens on October 15th, showing more than 100 films over a 10-day period, punctuated with live events including filmmaker panels, receptions and an Opening Night Gala at Harman Center for the Arts. Programming highlights include a screening of Love of Siam, a Best Picture submission for the Academy Awards from Thailand, the award-winning documentary Edie & Thea: A Very Long Engagement, and films featuring stars such as An Englishman in New York's John Hurt Cynthia Nixon and Swoosie Kurtz; Rupert Everett, Russell Brand and Colin Firth in St. Trinian's, and fagbug, a film by Erin Davies.
One In Ten Board President Lisa King reports, "The entire board and staff of One In Ten are bursting with gratitude and pride at this moment. Shakespeare Theater Company's Harman Center is not only one of the most beautiful and modern venues in the District, its world-class operations and technical facilities make an enormous contribution to our success as a film festival and as a year-round arts organization."
One and Ten and STC will hold a joint launch party on September 21, 2009 to celebrate the partnership. Please email for details.
